April 2012 Status Update

Some of you noticed that it has been a while since the last release of MediaGerbil. Don't be afraid, I am not abandoning MediaGerbil, I just had to take a break while going through a job change and some well-deserved time off. Now I'm diving back into the code with some fresh ideas and plans for some exciting changes and features. Stay tuned for announcements coming soon!

Latest Recommended Release

Release Candidate 2 release of MediaGerbil 0.3.0 was released on October 26, 2011!

This release incorporates a lot of issue fixes and new features based on the feedback I received! Check the MediaGerbil ChangeLog for details on all the changes, and I will be updating the documentation and screenshots shortly to reflect the new release! I am not providing a ClickOnce installer yet but only a self-extracting archive! That being said, the release is now stable enough to be the default release over version 0.2.0, so please go ahead and give it a try! To upgrade from an older version, just copy to files from the archive over the existing files.

I added a new feature for backdrop image download from TMDb, it works just like the cover image download, only that you can select multiple backdrop images by holding down the CTRL key on your keyboard while clicking on an image. All selected images will be downloaded and named using the common naming convention backdrop.jpg, backdrop1.jpg, backdrop2.jpg etc.

This release is the last release candidate build, I will only fix critical issues and showstoppers going forward. This means the final MediaGerbil 0.3.0 release is very close!

If you find issues with this RELEASE CANDIDATE release, please help out by filing defects in the Issue Tracker so they can be fixed!

What is MediaGerbil?

MediaGerbil is a media organization tool for movies and TV shows. It was written from the ground up in C# and strives to be a free alternative for tools such as <meta>browser or Media Center Master.

MediaGerbil is still in its early development and more features will come soon!

Why does the world need yet another media organization tool?

Over the years I have used many tools to organize my movies and tv shows, get meta data from online sources, download cover and thumbnail images, backdrops, fanart, banners etc. A lot of these tools were good at most of the things they did, but none satisfied all my needs. Then as those tools grew their developers realized the demand and opportunity to make a profit, so one tool after another was either abandoned or switched to some premium/freemium model. While most of them still offer free versions they either have significantly reduced functionality or other shortcomings that force you to go with the paid version.

After some frustration and unwillingness to cough up the cash I decided to write my own media organization tool instead. Being someone who loves writing software I figured it would be a fun project and I could even learn a thing or two. MediaGerbil is the result of this decision and my attempt to offer a truly free alternative to some of those other tools. You decide for yourself whether you like MediaGerbil or rather go with something else.

What kind of a name is MediaGerbil?

Most of the tools out there have some combination of the words media, tool, browser, meta, center etc. in them. Instead of being the next buzzword-anagram I picked a name that would yield as few other Google hits as possible, so it's easier to find this page. Also, just think about that adorable Gerbil digging through your media collection! :-)

So what does MediaGerbil do?

The current set of features includes:
  • Configurable included and excluded media directories on your local machine or network
  • Offline movie title matching using officially published IMDb movie lists for faster matching
  • IMDb meta data retrieval for title, runtime, genres, rating, votes, description, cover image etc.
  • TMDb cover image retrieval for better selection of available images.
  • Media list display fully sortable by title, year, MPAA rating, IMDb rating, IMDb votes and can be filtered to find items with missing covers or meta data.
  • Automatic caching of media list for quick loading on startup
For a full description of all features (working and planned/in progress) see MediaGerbil Features and/or the MediaGerbil ChangeLog.

For all Known Issues as well as Feature Requests please look at the Issue Tracker.

What are the OS/software requirements to run MediaGerbil?

MediaGerbil has been written and tested in Windows 7 x64. It relies on the Microsoft .NET 4.0 framework, which you can download and install for free from Microsoft's Web Site. If you encounter a problem running MediaGerbil on your system please submit an issue and I will try to reproduce and fix it!
